"Rocket Into Reading"

Dear Parents,

Our K-3 reading incentive program for this year at Bancroft School is called “Rocket into Reading.”  Using a Space theme, we hope to encourage extra reading practice which will develop more confident and successful readers.  Once again, we need your help to make this work!

Your child’s reading will be recorded in 15 or 30 minute sessions.  The children will bring home a reading bookmark each week following their weekly library visit (or they may pick one up at any time at the Library circulation desk.)  You may also print bookmarks from the link on the PTO Website. This bookmark will act as a reading log which must be signed by a parent or caretaker.

For Kindergarten and 1st graders, students must read an hour (4 fifteen minute blocks) outside of school in order to complete a bookmark.  For 2nd and 3rd graders, students must read for 2 hours (4 half hour blocks) in order to complete a bookmark.  When the completed and signed bookmark is returned to the Library, your child will be able to add fuel to their class rocketship.  The “Reading Rockets” will be displayed on the walls and bookcase ends in the Library.  As the children read, they will be able to monitor their progress by watching their rockets fuel up!

Individual students will be able to be recognized for their reading accomplishments as well.  With each 25 bookmarks completed, the student will add another heavenly body to our solar system mural.

Every type of reading counts.  Your child may read independently, may be read to, or may listen to a book on tape.  The material read may be fiction or non-fiction.  The important goal is to have every child reading outside of school as much as possible.

Please sign off on the bookmark each time that your child completes a block of reading.   When the bookmarks are brought back to the library, the rockets will be stamped with fuel (star, planet, alien, etc stamps).  There is no limit to how far your child can travel with a book!  If necessary a classroom will be able to launch a second or even a third rocket!

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,
